Being an huge sports fan, no season is more exciting than the post-season, especially when "your" team is participating! It was a fun week cheering for the Detroit Tigers baseball team...until Shane decided it would be funny to cheer for the Yankees! At first I attempted to communicate that somethings just aren't good to even joke about! It didn't work. No type of logical reasoning seemed to resonate (he is just three years old after all!), so I resorted to what every parent must at times - pure, unashamed bribery!! But even that took a few tries!!
Per Grandma Bruinsma's suggestion, I mentioned to Shane that if he became a Yankee fan, there would be no shakes at In-n-Out Burger when Grandpa and Grandma came for a visit, which is a tradition! Sadly, it was not enough. So finally today Shane and I sat down for a serious conversation over clementine oranges. Here is how it went...
Me: "Shane, are you going to cheer for the Tigers tonight against the Rangers?"
Shane: "No! I only cheer for the Yankees"
Me: "Well little man, I don't know if you are going to get any Christmas presents from Grandpa and Grandma if you cheer for the Yankees and not the Tigers."
Shane: "GO TIGGGGGEEERRRRRSSS!!" - said with a growl!
Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!! Go Tigers!
Good for you! You have to do what's in the best interest of your children, even if it means bribery! :)
